Lovey, blanket or plush: what the shelves mean
Our three softest shelves look alike in photos. In the hand they are three different objects, and the difference is mostly geometry.
The lovey: half animal, half cloth
A character lovey is a small blanket square with an animal head and arms sewn at the center. Ours usually run around 10 to 13 inches across. The body is the blanket itself, so the whole thing flattens, folds and drapes over a shoulder or a crib rail in a way a full plush never will.
Because the edge is where the action is, a lovey carries most of its satin tags around the perimeter. It is the lightest thing we sew, and the easiest to hold with one small fist.
The security blanket: more cloth, no torso
A security blanket drops the animal body entirely or shrinks it to a corner. What you get is fabric area: plush on one face, often satin or a contrasting weave on the other, tags around all four sides. It covers a lap, lines a stroller seat, and folds into a pocket square for the diaper bag.
If the choice is between lovey and blanket, think about what the toy will spend its day doing. Being carried by a head favours the lovey. Being spread over things favours the blanket.
The stuffed animal: a proper body
Our classic plush has volume, a seated shape and enough filling to stand up on a shelf. Tags still ring the seams, but the object itself is a companion rather than a cloth. These run larger, live longer on a bed than in a bag, and make the most sense once a favourite character has already emerged.
Plenty of our characters exist on two or three shelves at once. Drax Dragon, for instance, shows up as a lovey and as a full plush, so a character can follow along from one format to the next.
