Why the tags are there
People ask us about the tags more than anything else. Here is the honest answer: we did not invent the idea, a baby did.
A label, noticed
Long before Taggies existed, parents kept seeing the same small scene. A baby holds a brand new toy, ignores the toy, and works the care label between two fingers instead. The label is satin. It is cool, smooth and slightly slippery, and it behaves differently from the plush around it. That contrast is the whole show.
The founding idea of Taggies was to stop treating that label as an accident. Instead of one tag hidden in a seam, our toys carry a ring of them, folded satin loops in different colors and widths, sewn around the edges where small fingers actually travel.
What a tag loop actually is
Each loop is a short ribbon of woven satin, folded in half and caught in the seam during sewing, so both raw ends live inside the toy. The outside face is the shiny weave, and many of our loops carry a printed pattern on one side with plain satin on the other, which gives a thumb two textures on a single tag.
Widths vary on purpose. A blanket corner might carry a wide, flat loop while the stretch between them holds narrow ones. Grip changes with width, and a row of identical tags would be less interesting to work through than a row of different ones.
Sewn like everything else we make
Taggies sits inside the Mary Meyer family, a Vermont toy workshop that has been sewing since 1933. The tags go through the same seams and the same stitch counts as the rest of the toy, because a loop that is meant to be pulled on daily has to be anchored like a limb, not like a decoration.
That is also why the tags survive the washing machine along with the toy. A gentle cycle in a pillowcase, then air drying, and the satin keeps its slip. More on that in our washing note.
So when you see the ring of little ribbons, you are looking at the whole point of the brand, stitched where fingers can find it.
