Crinkle, rattle, squeak: the sounds our toys make
Shake our activity shelf and you get three distinct noises. Each one comes from a different mechanism sewn inside the fabric.
Crinkle: paper that is not paper
The crackle in a crinkle toy is a sheet of stiff film quilted between two fabric layers. It answers pressure anywhere on its surface, which is why a crinkle wing or a book page responds to a whole grabbing fist, not just to fingertips.
Crinkle is the quietest of the three sounds and the only one the toy makes continuously while being handled. On our shelf it lives in wings, ears, book pages and mat corners.
Rattle: a capsule, not loose beads
Our rattles hold a sealed capsule with pellets inside, buried in the filling or set into a ring. The sound needs a wrist movement, so it arrives and stops on purpose, unlike crinkle which simply happens.
Capsule placement changes the pitch. A rattle in a plush body sounds muffled and round, the same capsule in a hard ring sounds brighter. Neither version has anything loose inside the toy itself.
Squeak and chime: the rarer two
A squeaker is a small bellows that needs a real squeeze between palm and fingers, which makes it the most deliberate sound of the set. Chimes are weighted tubes that ring softly when the whole toy tips, and we mostly sew them into round-bottomed characters.
A good number of our activity toys stack two or three of these in one body: crinkle in the wings, a rattle in the belly, a squeaker in a foot. The point is that different grips get answered differently.
